Both Canon and Nikon have introduced new cameras this week. Canon with their new 50D, a 1.6 crop factor camera with a 15.1mp chip and an impressive 12800 ISO, it’s also built from a new magnesium alloy body, WOW, an impressive step up from the D40. Also new to Nikon’s stable is the new D90 (D80 replacement). It is built around the same chip found in the D300, auto active D-Lighting, has face detection, is lighter and can record movie clips in 720p, double WOW!!!!

Photo of the Week – August 18, 2008
August 18, 2008This shot was taken by Kelly Greer.
I like the way this shot is composed. I like the way the darkness of the rocks and trees counterbalances the lightness of the water and sky, drawing your eye to the focal point.

The second one is Serious Baby by Ambient Photography of Vermont.

Showing Prints Will Help You Sell Prints!
August 7, 2008I recently became privy to a conversation with a photographer that’s somewhat new to the industry. They where commenting on the lack of print sales from their weddings. When asked how they present their images, they said on a Disc. If you don’t give your clients tangible prints, I.E. Proof Magazines or the like, the client will not be inclined to order prints. Proofs are more mobile and accessible for your client to carry around and show friends and relatives. It also implies that prints are the ultimate goal and not a spot between the Music CD’s.
Working with the Nikon SB900
August 4, 2008I spent this past weekend working heavily with the SB-900. The wide angle coverage is second to none. I utilize my Nikon 12-24 DX extensively on the dance floor, and this flash delivers the goods. I must caution all of the 2800-2900 mA battery users out there. This flash has a very fast recycle time which causes the circuitry to heat up. If you are shooting rapidly with the flash outputting at full power, you will cause the flash’s internal temperature rise quickly, tripping the internal thermal sensor, and this will shut down the flash sooner than if you where using 2100mA batteries. This has been confirmed with Nikon.
